“Sacred land” exhibition

Art as a sign of rebirth.

Together with the Municipality of Ancona and the Fondo Mole, the Museo Tattile Statale Omero has organized and created the "Sacred Land - Art as a Sign of Rebirth" exhibition, at the Mole Vanvitelliana in Ancona. It will be open from 27 November 2021 to 8 May 2022.

The project

The aim of the project, curated by Flavio Arensi, is to allow contemporary art to interact with ancient works that have been restored after the violent earthquake that struck the Marche and Central Italy five years ago. "Nevertheless”, says Flavio Arensi, “the intent of the exhibition is not to engage with the material facts, with the losses and destruction caused by the earthquake or with mourning or fear in the strictest sense. Rather it is a retrieval and a restitution of life".

The itinerary

The exhibition itinerary that extends through all the spaces of the Mole Vanvitelliana, from the walls to the courtyard, from the Tobacco Warehouse to the storerooms of the Soprintendenza delle Marche, presents 120 works by 36 artists, exponents of widely differing expressive languages: Claudio Abate, Guido Airoldi, Giovanni Albanese, Peppe Avallone, Gianfranco Baruchello, Matteo Basilè, Mirella Bentivoglio, Renato Birolli, Gregorio Botta, Andrea Bruno, Silvia Camporesi, Maurizio Cannavacciuolo, Leonardo Cremonini, Gino de Dominicis, Franco Fanelli, Flavio Favelli, Piero Fogliati, Paolo Icaro, Titina Maselli, Pietro Masturzo, Marco Mazzoni, Zoran Music, Gina Pane, Luca Pancrazzi, Filippo Piantanida, Franco Piavoli, Franco Pinna, Pasquale Palmieri, Roberto Pugliese, Davide Quayola, Salvo, Giorgio Santucci, Giuseppe Spagnulo, Pierantonio Tanzola, Alessandro Tesei, Ascosi Lasciti, Zerocalcare.

Museo Omero's contribution

The Museo Omero, in addition to providing the reception services and guided tours, is responsible for exhibition accessibility. This is a real challenge as most of the works are photographs and videos. We are therefore designing a special itinerary for people with visual disabilities, with six works to touch and five relief reproductions accompanied by their respective Braille translations.

Audio descriptions will also be created to facilitate reading the selected works: these will be available via audiopen and earphones from January 2022. Listening will be a journey: the narration will accompany the blind visitors’ hands in their tactile exploration and musical suggestions will enable them to connect with the theme of each section they visit. The audio content will also include appropriate directions and information about the surrounding areas that will help visitors to move around. Finally, there will be no shortage of audio contributions from the artists along the itinerary.

The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Soprintendenza delle Marche, with the support of the Regione Marche and the Fondazione Cariverona through the Bando Valore Territori, with the patronage of ANCI (the National Association of Italian Municipalities).
